How to Play Poker

Poker is a card game where the object is to win the pot, which is the sum of all the bets made during one deal. A player can win the pot by having a high-ranking hand or by making a bet that no other players call. The game can be played by two or more people, but the ideal number of players is six to eight. The game is usually played with a standard 52-card deck, although some variations use other cards.

Before the game begins, each player must place an initial amount of money into the pot. This is called an ante or blind. These bets are mandatory and create an incentive for players to play the game. They can also be a good way to meet new people and make friends.

After the antes and blinds are placed, the players receive 2 hole cards each. There is then a round of betting, starting with the player to the left of the dealer. If a player wants to stay in the pot, he must match the stake of the last raiser. He may also raise his stake further, but if he is unwilling to do either, he must fold.

Once all the players have revealed their hands, the winner is declared. The highest-ranking hand is a royal flush, which contains an Ace, King, Queen, and Jack of the same suit. Other high-ranking hands include a straight, four of a kind, and two pair.
