The Risks and Protective Factors of Online Gambling
Online Gambling involves the use of a computer or mobile device with an Internet connection to place bets on casino games. To participate, you need three things: a computer or mobile device with a web browser and a working Internet connection; an account; and money to deposit into your account. Once a player has an account, they can choose from a variety of games and bet with real money. Winnings are then placed into the account, which can be withdrawn or used to play again.
The online gambling industry is regulated in some countries, but not all. Governments struggle to regulate online gambling because of the nature of modern technology. In addition, the industry is highly profitable, which makes it difficult for governments to tax. The problem is exacerbated by the fact that many gamblers use credit cards and do not declare their incomes, which can make it difficult to track them.
A number of factors influence gambling, including the environment and life contexts to which a person belongs, individual characteristics, and relational aspects. Although several risk and protective factors have been identified, their relationships have rarely been investigated. Moreover, most studies use nonrepresentative samples. In addition, they are mostly cross-sectional, whereas longitudinal investigations are preferable. As a result, this study aims to provide a synthesis of the knowledge about these risk and protective factors and their relationship with gambling. Additionally, it highlights some critical issues for future research.
