She believes that a combination of factors keeps people playing, including diminishing losses and concentrating on the times they\u2019ve won.<\/p>\n
Those who play the most often are in the bottom quintile of the income distribution, people with only a few dollars for discretionary spending. This makes the lottery regressive, and it can be addictive. However, there\u2019s no logical reason for these players to be loyal to the shabby black box when they\u2019re disloyal to other traditions and relics.
