Another factor is the hedonic \u201cendowment effect,\u201d where people feel a sense of personal wealth in their possession of things like fancy dinnerware. And finally, there\u2019s the opportunity cost of playing the lottery, where people trade in money they could be spending on other things, such as retirement savings or paying down debt.
